Rabbits' fossils were found in North America and Asia. The family Laporidae is believed to have been developed in the Oligocene and early Miocene in North America. Though, there is an opinion that rabbits have purely Asian origins.
Rabbits and hares were widespread in the Pliocene. Evolutionary changes have been rather moderate in lagomorphs.

There are many rescues that can offer cute bunnies for adoption. If you have made up your mind to obtain a pet rabbit, consider adopting a rabbit from a shelter. Older rescue rabbits have their own personalities. However, this fact does not prevent them from making excellent pets. They bond with their new family quite successfully. Millions of rabbits are killed in the US every year. Hunters often use rabbits as decoys when hunting larger animals. When injured or frightened, rabbits produce loud screams. Some hunters use such devices, which make the sound that the injured rabbit emits. Foxes and bobcats can be lured by these sounds. The pygmy rabbit is endangered in Washington. The Washington Zoo is breeding endangered rabbits in order to re-introduce them to protected habitat in central Washington.
Rabbits often become prey to traps, they are run over by cars on roads, and natural habitat is sometimes destroyed by activities of humans. The conservationists claim that the key to the survival of rabbits is a network of conservancies, which ought to be widely supported by farmers.
